Zoigl Stars

what’s the deal with the six-pointed star?

Zoigl stars are a traditional brewing symbol that originated in Eastern Bavaria.

The six points represent the different elements of beer: Earth, Fire, Water (the elements used), and malt, water, hops (the ingredients used). of course, yeast is the forgotten element, because they weren’t even identified until Louis Pasteur’s work in the early 19th century. So, not only does it represent the art of brewing, but…

…six-pointed stars are found in the iconography of Richmond, itself. most of the sidewalks were paved with Nelsonville salt-glazed bricks (in fact, in the Starr Historic District which borders our brewery, you can still find original sidewalks in place!); the Train station has six-star emblems all over it!

what better way to continue to honor the heritage of the region than with a symbol synonymous with the industry?
