Before the 1850s, lager beers didn’t exist - ale yeast was all you could find, unless it was wild-cultured yeast (and they’re unpredictable!), and while many ales are still brewed today, most folks enjoyed those crisp, clean, easy-drinking lager beers.
In some places (like Köln or Düsseldorf in Germany, and much of Belgium), ales continued to be made, but soon became synonymous with an “older” time or style - and soon became known as “altbier!”
At Teuerberg, our flagship beer is an altbier - called (appropriately, we think) Alt Zeit (old time!).
Crafted with German yeast, this beer is made with two types of malt (amber and light), with Saaz and Spalt hops, for a nicely-balanced beer that’s great for any time - old or new!
